November is just about done and for a lot of us, it’s easy to get focused on the holidays, the end of the year, and taking a little much-deserved time off with family. But what used to be “award season” is now a year-round endeavor, and before you punch the clock for the last time on 2017, you should start thinking about the awards to be won next year — particularly at PromaxBDA’s North America Awards.
Promax hasn’t announced its call for entries yet, but if past years are any indication, we’re expecting it to happen any time. It’s one of the biggest, most competitive competitions of the year for TV advertising and marketing, and we recommend our partners get all the advantages they can if they’re hoping to take home a statue.
In this case, those advantages mean being prepared. While other competitors might not think about their Promax entries until they’re ringing in the New Year, you can get a lot of mileage out of getting ready as early as you can, and making sure you, and we here at Brave Dog, have everything needed to succeed in the competition.
We’ve put together a few tips that can help you get the best foot forward for Promax. Here’s what you should do to get prepped for the competition, put your best entries out there, and ensure the least amount of stress and the most possible awards.
Get your assets together now
The key to any successful run at a competition is good assets. Now is a low-pressure time to get together your videos and images together, and to make sure you have everything you need to submit your entries as soon as you’re ready.
Be sure to make sure your assets are high quality. Videos and images are often placed on large screens for judges at various competitions, but even if they’re only transferred over the Internet, hazy and blurry images and videos can kill an entry. Keeping the quality up is a great way to make sure you don’t undermine your entry from the start.
Lock down your campaign results
Promax only requires short writeups to go with entries, but even if you don’t intend to include the results of your campaigns and marketing efforts in your summaries, you’ll still want to get all the information together about your work that you can. That includes original marketing plans, inspirations, and anything that illustrates how you solved problems along the way. Writeups are best when they tell a story to the judges, and the most compelling stories are often about how your team overcame challenges along the way.
All that information, especially the results of your efforts, are useful for future competitions you’ll be entering throughout 2018. Some actually include numbers that prove your success, and others require detailed information about the story of your work. Getting all that material together now will make creating your entries easier, and make them more compelling for judges.
Earlier is better
We don’t yet know what the Promax deadlines are, but we do know one thing: The longer you wait to get your entries done, the more they’ll cost. Promax and other competitions often include multiple deadlines, and the best prices are always available at the Early Bird markers. That’s why getting your orders together now is such a good idea — it’ll save you money, allowing you to enter more of your work, and keep your budget from ballooning.
Be honest with yourself about your work
Every year, competitions become tougher and tougher. Promax is one of the biggest, and that means that tons of people are entering. You’re going to go up against some of the best work in the business, and if you want to be successful, it means you’re going to need to be honest with yourself.
You might love a piece of work, a campaign, a TV spot, or an experiential event. But knowing how it stacks up against the competition, or whether you’re about to enter a dense, highly competitive category, is essential to doing well in a competition. Check last year’s winners in the categories you want to enter and get an objective idea of well you’ll compete against the best of the best. Assessing where you have the best chance of winning will help you save money on entries and maximize your chances of bringing home awards.
Get video of your events and special projects
When putting on events and creating campaigns, being able to show the judges what they were like when they were happening is essential to winning. Spend the money on photographers and videographers to document your events, and work to create high-quality videos that will show the judges exactly what you created. If you had a great campaign, a social media activation, or an experience, you want to convey it as it happened and show what it was like for people who participated. Strong videos that get the experience across to the judges are a key to winning.
Spend the time to get ready and prepare for 2018’s competitions, and you’ll be rewarded with gold through Promax and beyond. Spend some time to check out the Promax website and the last year’s winners. Preparation is a major key to success — so spend the time to get yourself ready, and as always, keep being creative!
